Dance lessons at the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh give children and adults the chance to explore movement, build confidence, and stay active in a fun, supportive environment. With classes offered across Pittsburgh, our experienced instructors teach a variety of styles including ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and creative movement. YMCA dance programs are designed for all ages and skill levels, helping kids develop coordination and teamwork while encouraging creativity and self-expression. YMCA Preschool Combination Dance Class (Ages 3–5)

Class Overview

Designed as an exciting introduction to the world of dance, this 8 week combination class helps young children explore movement, rhythm, and creativity in a safe, structured, and nurturing environment. Tailored specifically for ages 3 to 5, the class focuses on building gross motor skills, coordination, and confidence while keeping the emphasis strictly on fun.

Key Focus Areas

  • Foundational Techniques: Introduces basic steps and terminology from multiple styles—most commonly a mix of Ballet  Jazz/Creative Movement 

  • Motor Skills & Coordination: Uses playful exercises, imaginative movement, and across-the-floor activities to develop balance, flexibility, spatial awareness, and rhythm.

  • Social & Emotional Growth: Encourages listening skills, following directions, sharing space, and building independence in a group setting away from parents.

What to Expect

  • Engaging Structure: Classes are 50 minutes, broken down into short, engaging segments (e.g., warm-ups/stretches, barre or center work, across-the-floor traveling steps, and a fun creative game) to match the attention span of young children.

  • No-Pressure Environment: The Spencer YMCA emphasizes personal growth, self-expression, and enjoyment over strict competition. This preschool classes focus purely on class-time fun.

Suggested Attire & Shoes

  • Girls: Usually a solid-colored leotard,  tights, and  ballet shoes.  Optional skirts or hair worn in a secure bun or ponytail.

  • Boys: Comfortable clothing such as a white t-shirt and black shorts or pants, along with appropriate dance shoes.

 

Requirements:

  • Participants must be potty trained.
  • Water bottle
