The YMCA Swim Team of Greater Pittsburgh is dedicated to fostering swimming skills for individuals of all ages and abilities. Our swimmers develop strength, speed, and endurance while honing their stroke technique through our comprehensive swim team programs, which also provide competitive opportunities. We offer a regional program spanning the Pittsburgh area, where swim teams uphold the YMCA’s core values and encourage personal progression, goal setting, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Our programs are available year-round for individuals aged 5 and above, ensuring accessible and continuous development opportunities.

Spring Conditioning

Get ready for the summer swim season with our 6-week Spring Conditioning Program! This program will focus on stroke technique, turns, starts, and endurance training to build strength, speed and confidence in the water. Our expert coaching staff will break down each aspect of your swim to refine technique while also improving overall conditioning. Whether you’re looking to fine-tune your skills, or boost your endurance, this program is the perfect way to dive into summer competition feeling strong and prepared!

Requirement criteria for New Members:

100 yards freestyle with flip turns; 50 yards backstroke; 50 yards breaststroke; 25 yards butterfly; 2 minute tread

Practice Times: Monday through Thursday between 6pm-9pm depending on practice group. No minimum requirement for attendance; recommended to attend at least 2x/week.

Summer Swim Team

Join the BFY Sharks this summer for some relaxed competition and strengthening of skills. While there are no try-outs, there are basic criteria that must be met prior to joining. The season will start on June 2nd and run through July 24th, with the last meet the weekend of July 12th/13th followed by 2 weeks of skill specific training.

Requirement criteria for New Members:

100 yards freestyle with flip turns; 50 yards backstroke; 50 yards breaststroke; 25 yards butterfly; 2 minute tread

Swimmers should have completed group levels 1-6 or equivalent.

Bronze swimmers must be able to:

  • Swim 25-50 continuous yards of Freestyle with rotary (side) breathing, continuous arm motion and continuous kick.
  • Swim 25-50 continuous yards of Backstroke with continuous arm motion and continuous kick.
  • Have previous knowledge of Breaststroke and Butterfly.
  • Attempt a dive from the side of the pool or off the diving block.
  • Pass an endurance set (Example: 4×25’s freestyle with 1:00 minute break after each 25.)

Gold swimmers must be able to:

  • Swim 200-500 Freestyle (continuous) with continuous arm motion, kicking and rotary (side) breathing.
  • Swim 400 IM (continuous) with appropriate turns and continuous arm and kicking motion.
  • Dive from the starting block.
  • Perform proper flip turns/pullouts for all four strokes (Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly) and be completed during each practice.
  • Pass an endurance set. (Example: 4x100s Freestyle and 4x100s choice with :30 second break after each 100.)

Silver Swimmers must be able to:

  • Swim 50-100 Freestyle with continuous arm motion, kicking and rotary (side) breathing.
  • Swim 50-100 of the four competitive strokes continuously with appropriate turns and continuous arm and kicking motion.
  • Dive from the starting block.
  • Continuously perform flip turns – no open turns.
  • Perform the appropriate streamline/turn for each stroke.
  • Butterfly — Get their arms over the water and perform the butterfly kick.
  • Breaststroke — Perform the breaststroke pull and kick.
  • Backstroke — Swim on their back for the entire distance and perform a backstroke flip turn and appropriate finish.
  • Pass an endurance set (Example: 4×50’s freestyle and/or Backstroke with 1:00 minute break after each 50.)
